In 2022, Kentucky Double Dollars is conducting a small pilot in partnership with the Organic Association of Kentucky and the Kentucky Farm Share Coalition to use SNAP funds towards CSA shares. Learn more about how it works!

What’s a CSA?

CSA stands for Community Supported Agriculture. It is a subscription-based model where members purchase a share of the farm’s harvest in advance of the season and then receive a weekly box of farm products during the growing season.

This type of food purchasing focuses on community and sharing the risk and reward of growing food. Farmers benefit by having a secure market for their product. Members benefit by convenient access to fresh food and a relationship with the farmers that grow it.

Eligibility

SNAP participants in the Lexington area who can attend the Lexington Farmers Market on a Saturday or Sunday for ten consecutive weeks starting in July 9th and 10th. Payment is not required up front, but recipients will need $136.25 total in benefits available throughout the course of the program ($54.50 every four weeks, then $27.25 the last two weeks.).

Process

Participants will come the market booth at the beginning of each month and swipe their benefits card with the market manager for $54.50, the cost of two small CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) shares and double their funds using Kentucky Double Dollars. In return, they will receive four paper vouchers, each good for one CSA Share from their chosen farm. They will take one voucher to the farm’s booth and receive their CSA share that week. The other vouchers will be used in the following weeks. They will return to the market booth to pay again when they have depleted all their vouchers. (The last two weeks of the program, customers will only pay for one share and receive one bonus voucher.)

Share Details

Each week, participants will get a mini or small vegetable share that includes 6-7 USDA Certified Organic vegetables from their partner farm of choice (either Elmwood Stock Farm OR Lazy Eight Stock Farm).

Partner Farms

Participants will be able to partner with either Elmwood Stock Farm or Lazy Eight Stock Farm this season. Elmwood Stock Farm’s CSA will offer either a Saturday OR Sunday pick-up and Lazy Eight Stock Farm’s CSA will offer a Sunday pick-up at the Lexington Farmers Market.

Pick Up Location & Dates

Shares can be picked up on Saturday at the Lexington Farmers Market from 8-2pm at Tandy Centennial Park (formerly known as Cheapside Park) OR Sunday at the Southland Drive location from 10am-2pm. The CSA season will run for 10 weeks starting the weekend of July 9th/10th to September.
